traccia un quadro dell'attuale situazione e delinea i possibili scenari
futuri.

L’Unione europea è in procinto di varare la nuova direttiva per
uniformare il mondo dell’e-commerce. Mercoledì infatti la Commissione,
su proposta del commissario alla protezione dei consumatori Meglena
Kuneva darà l’ok alla direttiva che intende dare una spinta alle
vendite sul web anche fuori dai confini nazionali.

Una delle nuove funzionalità della prossima distribuzione OpenSolaris 2008.11 sarà la possibilità di navigare "indietro nel tempo" all'interno delle proprie cartelle e, di conseguenza, di poter recuperare versioni precedenti o cancellate dei propri file. Ciò è possibile grazie all'integrazione all'interno del desktop Gnome (ed in particolare dell'applicazione Nautilus) di uno "slider" che permette di consultare gli snapshot creati su un file system ZFS.
Infatti la distribuzione OpenSolaris 2008.11 sarà al 100% su ZFS, inclusi swap e dump device, con l'ulteriore vantaggio di non dover partizionare lo spazio tra i file system e l'area di swap.

Ecco alcune interessanti prove effettuate in un ambiente di produzione da Don MacAskill (CEO & "Chief Geek" di SmugMug, uno dei migliori servizi di gestione online per le proprie fotografie) con i dati del database MySQL ospitati da un file system ZFS sulla distribuzione OpenSolaris. Lo storage engine utilizzato è InnoDB.
In particolare sono stati approfonditi dei test sulla componente di compressione trasparente del file system:

...con l'annuncio nella famiglia CoolThreads del nuovo sistema Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 Server (che può ospitare fino a 4 processori UltraSPARC T2 Plus, ciascuno con 8 core) sono stati presentati anche i risultati dei principali benchmark di mercato, sia quelli più "tecnici" (come SPECcpu2006, SPECjbb2005, SPECjAppServer2004) che quelli più "realistici", basati su applicazioni "vere" (ad esempio SAP e Siebel).
La maggior parte delle informazioni utili sono state raccolte nel blog del collega Allan Packer.
Il sistema include le funzionalità di virtualizzazione e partizionamento delle risorse sia a livello firmware (tramite i Logical Domain) che di sistema operativo (con i Solaris Container). In particolare con i Solaris Container è possibile consolidare in uno stesso sistema fisico ambienti Solaris 8, Solaris 9 e Solaris 10.
Ricordo che è possibile approfondire "a piacere" l'architettura hardware e software del sistema, dato che sono distribuite in modalità open source rispettivamente nei progetti OpenSPARC e OpenSolaris.

Firefox è il "portabandiera" dei
prodotti opensource in ambito aziendale e viene installato, in egual
misura, sia su sistemi Linux che su workstation Windows.

le conclusioni di un nuovo studio diffuso da "Open Source Census" che
mette in luce come i software opensource siano più frequentemente
adottati in Europa rispetto agli Stati Uniti, soprattutto in ambito
governativo e nel campo della finanza.

— Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue
totaled $4.5 billion in the second quarter of 2008, an 18.8 percent
increase over the same period in 2007, according to Gartner, Inc.

Sun Microsystems showed the highest growth year-over-year at 34.7
percent mainly due to a large increase in the company’s Sun StorageTek
2000, 6000 and 9000 series revenue. NetApp had the next highest growth
with 22.9 percent. Also recording double digit growth were Dell with
18.3 percent, Hitachi Data Systems at 18.1 percent, EMC at 16.0
percent, and IBM with a growth of 14.9 percent.

— A recent study from IDC has put the energy issue that datacenters are
facing in Europe on the map, throwing some light on its actual impact
on organizations. The research shows how the amount of energy required
by servers and datacenters is climbing at a worrying speed, and has
grown annually by more than 13% between 2006 and 2007.
"Such
a rise in energy demands can be explained by the growing number of
active servers in the region, but also — and most importantly — by the
electricity requirement that machines, on average, have due to
multicore technology and enhanced hardware feature," said Giorgio
Nebuloni, research analyst with IDC European Systems and Infrastructure
Solutions. "The efforts that industry players have started to put into
building energy-efficient components are not enough to balance the rise
of energy needs. To contain them, organizations have to act on the
infrastructure level, adopting best practices and redesigning their
facility to improve cooling and power processes."

September 30, 2008 – The continued explosion in creation and storage of
unstructured data and the need to generate more copies of data for
availability, analytics, and archiving will be primary drivers of new storage
system developments over the next five years. The most significant new
development in storage consumption, however, is the emergence of "content
depots" as a major consumer of enterprise disk storage capacity. These
content depots are primarily in the business of gathering, organizing, and
providing access to large quantities of digital content. According to a new
study from IDC, these content depots will consume 17.4% of new enterprise disk
storage capacity shipped in 2008, but only account for 5.1% of all spending, reflecting their focus
on deploying storage solutions at very low costs.

Storage Networking World (SNW) Europe (www.snweurope.com), the region's
largest independent conference dedicated to data and storage management
will provide its delegates the opportunity to learn how to address the
current credit crunch with a wide variety of data and storage
management technologies.
The number of active home Internet users went up in the majority of countries tracked by Nielsen Online during the month of August.
The Internet population increased in Italy (5.54 percent);
France (3.18 percent); Germany (2.78 percent); Brazil (2.60 percent);
the U.K. (2.27 percent); Japan (2.20 percent); the U.S. (0.30); and
Switzerland (0.23). For the past several months, the number of active
Internet users in Germany has remained flat.
A drop in the number of active Internet home users was measured
in Australia (-2.47 percent) and Spain (-0.48 percent). Australia also
experienced a drop in Internet users in July.
Nielsen Online uses a sampling methodology applied worldwide,
which allows for data aggregation on a regional and global basis.
Active Internet users are derived from the number of users who have
logged on in the previous 30 days.
Emulex CNA Demonstrates Strong Showing of Interoperability at Fibre Channel over Ethernet FCIA Plugfest - SNS

Participation Showcases Emulex's Industry-Leading Virtualisation Capabilities within FCoE Environments.
Emulex has announced results from its recent participation in a Fibre
Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) plugfest hosted by the Fibre Channel
Industry Association (FCIA) last week at the University of New
Hampshire Interoperability Lab Emulex tested its LightPulse family of
LP21000 FCoE Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) on a number of different
platforms, successfully showcasing strong interoperability with all
participating companies, while also demonstrating its LightPulse
Virtual HBA technology with N-Port ID Virtualisation (NPIV) support
over FCoE. During the plugfest, Emulex tested its CNAs in a variety of
configurations to showcase successful interoperability through FCoE
devices from multiple vendors to native FCoE storage and across a Fibre
Channel SAN to Fibre Channel targets from multiple vendors. Additional
testing of Emulex's industry-standard NPIV implementation over a large
number of virtual ports resulted in successful interoperability across
the FCoE fabric to native Fibre Channel storage."Given the evolutionary
nature of FCoE and its leverage of enterprise-proven Fibre Channel
technology, the plugfest showed significant maturity at this stage of
the technology cycle," said Joe Gervais, senior director of product

differently, and it's creating a lot of confusion in the market,
according to Gartner, Inc. Analysts say it is imperative to understand
these different perspectives and set the proper expectations to obtain
the anticipated benefits.

Per il 33% degli intervistati il primo pensiero va invece
all'aspetto dell'efficienza: ossia lo storage deve ottimizzare la leva
che esiste fra la capacità operativa e i costi.
Solo il 7%, invece, si prende cura dello storage attenendosi ai
criteri cosiddetti “green”, ossia che contemplano il risparmio
energetico.

Imprese: in 1.690 partecipano ai 2 bandi Industria 2015 con 142 progetti - 01Net
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Roma, 23 set - Sono 1.690 le imprese e i
centri di ricerca che hanno partecipato con 142 progetti ai primi due
bandi di innovazione industriale di "Industria 2015" su Efficienza
energetica e Mobilita' sostenibile. Lo comunica il ministero dello
Sviluppo economico precisando che gli incentivi dei due bandi, pari a
380 milioni, potrebbero mettere in moto investimenti in ricerca e
innovazione per 3,1 miliardi (1,7 per Efficienza energetica e 1,4 per
Mobilità sostenibile).

Secondo i dati presentati da Gartner nella giornata di ieri, il mercato
mondiale delle telecomunicazioni dovrebbe raggiungere un valore di
duemila miliardi di dollari entro la fine dell’anno, in crescita del
7,6% rispetto al 2007.
Il settore, sottolinea la società di
ricerca, sta attraversando un periodo non particolarmente facile, con
rallentamenti evidenti, se non addirittura decrescite, sui mercati più
maturi.

Per quanto riguarda una lettura dei dati su base geografica, il 2008
dovrebbe, sempre secondo Gartner, confermarsi come l’anno del sorpasso
della regione Asia Pacifico sugli Stati Uniti: laddove il Nord America
mette a segno un +4,5% anno su anno, la regione Asia Pacifico registra
un +8%. Buone anche le crescite dell’area Medio Oriente e Africa, che
si attestano sull’8,6% anno su anno dal 2007 al 2012.
Sterling Commerce ha presentato i risultati di una ricerca, condotta
da Vanson Bourne su 400 It manager francesi, tedeschi, inglesi e
italiani, che evidenzia come le aziende italiane stiano iniziando a
trarre beneficio dalla fatturazione elettronica, nonostante siano state
frenate dalle complessità legate alle normative in fatto di conformità.
La ricerca, infatti, ha rilevato che il 46% della aziende
italiane, rispetto al 40% di quelle europee, sta seriamente prendendo
in considerazione l'implementazione di una soluzione di fatturazione
elettronica automatizzata. Eppure l'86% ritiene di non disporre ancora
delle necessarie risorse interne per realizzare questo processo.

School of management del Politecnico di Milano presenterà in occasione
della rassegna milanese.

infrastrutture Ict “evolute”. Ancora il 29% utilizza infrastrutture
“embrionali”, mentre il 55% si trova in una fase di transizione, con
